The Uli Biafo Spire (5620m) is a stunning and technically challenging peak located in the Karakoram Range of northern Pakistan. It is a popular destination for mountaineers and trekkers seeking a challenging climb in one of the world’s most rugged and remote mountain ranges. The Uli Biafo Spire is located near the Uli Biafo Glacier in the Biafo Muztagh subrange, which is part of the larger Karakoram Range. Its unique spire shape makes it a striking feature in the landscape, drawing the attention of climbers and adventurers. The mountain offers a combination of rock and ice climbing, with challenging terrain on the way to the summit. The Biafo Glacier, located nearby, is one of the longest glaciers in the world outside the polar regions, and the entire region is known for its remote beauty, making it a popular yet less crowded climbing destination.

Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrival in Islamabad

Arrival at Islamabad International Airport. Transfer to hotel and overnight stay in Islamabad for preparation and briefing.

Day 2:
Drive from Islamabad to Skardu (9-12 hours)

Drive through scenic landscapes, including the famous Indus River. Overnight stay in Skardu.

Day 3:
Rest and Acclimatization in Skardu

Rest day for acclimatization and preparation for the trek. Final gear check and briefings on the trek.

Day 4:
Skardu to Askole (6-8 hours by jeep)

Travel from Skardu to Askole, the last village before the trek begins. Overnight stay in Askole (basic camp).

Day 5-6:
Trek from Askole to Biafo Glacier Base Camp

Begin the trek from Askole to Biafo Glacier Base Camp, which takes about 2-3 days of trekking. The trek passes through rocky trails, river crossings, and picturesque valleys with views of various peaks and glaciers. Camp at scenic locations along the way, gradually gaining altitude.

Day 7-8:
Arrival at Biafo Glacier Base Camp

Reach the Biafo Glacier Base Camp, which will serve as the staging point for the climb to Uli Biafo Spire. Rest and acclimatize at the base camp, which is situated at an altitude of approximately 4,500 meters (14,763 feet). Spend the day exploring the glacier and preparing for the ascent.

Day 9-10:
Approach to Uli Biafo Spire

From the base camp, begin the approach to the Uli Biafo Spire, setting up Camp 1 at a suitable location closer to the spire. The route to the spire includes a mixture of glacier navigation, rock scrambling, and ice sections, requiring climbers to be proficient in both rock and ice climbing techniques.

Day 11-12:
Climb to the Summit of Uli Biafo Spire (5,620m)

On these days, climbers will attempt the final ascent of the Uli Biafo Spire. The climb is a mixture of rock and ice, requiring careful navigation, technical skills, and endurance. The summit day will require a long push, as the final part of the climb can be steep and exposed, with rocky and icy sections. Once at the summit, enjoy panoramic views of the Karakoram Range, Biafo Glacier, and surrounding peaks like Broad Peak, Gasherbrum, and others.

Day 13-14:
Descent to Base Camp

After reaching the summit, descend back to Biafo Glacier Base Camp. The descent involves retracing the route taken during the approach and ensuring safety while descending steep and technical sections. Rest and relax at base camp.

Day 15-16:
Return Trek to Askole

From the Biafo Glacier Base Camp, begin the return trek to Askole Village. The descent takes around 2-3 days, allowing for rest and acclimatization as needed. Overnight camping along the way.

Day 17:
Askole to Skardu

Travel back to Skardu by jeep from Askole. Rest and celebrate the successful climb. Overnight in Skardu.

Day 18:
Skardu to Islamabad

Travel from Skardu to Islamabad either by flight or road. Upon arrival in Islamabad, enjoy a final night in the city before departing.
